Research Workgroup Minutes for

Tuesday 10/4/2011, 1-2 PM EST

Co-Chairs: Laura Anderko and Wade Hill

Staff:  Katie Huffling

Recording of this meeting can be found at the bottom of this page.

1.  Roll Call for meeting participants - Barb Polivka, Wade Hill, Liz Tyree, Katie Huffling, Karen Towne, Barb Sattler

2. Future of Nursing Report

A copy of the report can be downloaded at here

May be a place where the research WG could have a say to ensure that as we move forward with the discussion of the Future of Nursing the EH is included

Montana – state based activity, committee to implement the recommendations

Liz - Frequently referenced in North Dakota, have a new dean at her university -Denise Kornavish – came from University of Miami, Liz has brought EH to her attention, is working on interdisciplinary committee on energy on campus and dean

Barb Polivka – not much going on in Ohio, also has a new dean at her university

Barb Sattler – UMB – have had several speakers on the report, nothing specific yet

Heavily focused on healthcare, education/training, but not as much on research, prevention

Difficult to see how EH nursing research fits in with the report. Possibly program evaluation

Will bring this to the Steering Committee and the Education WG

Maybe we should go to Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and discuss how there should be a parallel document that is more expansive

3. Reach the Decision Makers Fellowship

Started by former EPA scientist who noticed that industry was coming to speak with the EPA all the time but not hearing from the public health, scientists, communities, etc. and created this program

Katie described her group that is making comment on the chlorpyrifos human health risk assessment and asking EPA not to reregister this pesticice

Interdisciplinary groups that work on policy pieces that are then brought to EPA

Need to make sure that nurses continue to be included in future fellowships

4. Strategic Plan

Strategic plan came out of steering committee meeting last year and it was decided to focus on chemical policy. How does research fit into this plan? Members should develop a menu of options to work on

Difficulty getting members on the call

May need to try something creative to engage the group and to make sure it is reflective of the broad interests and skills of the WG

Literature review on chemical policy?

Had face-to-face meetings with NINR and NIEHS – they are aware that this is an area that needs to be supported

Should talk with NCI – prevention, environmental toxicants and cancer, etc.

Conference grant – EH nursing research, translational research

Home for research/scholarship – writing for publication, grants

Survey – getting idea from larger group for their vision/direction and have project meetings

How can we bring value to the collective through a project? Conference grant?

Manuscript – Future of EH nursing research? Concept papers?

Having some mentoring on the calls – for example, what are the best journals to submit to

Add activities that can create a niche for EH nursing research

May want to try to have member on National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP)

5. Round Table

APHA meeting at Georgetown University on October 30 6pm-8pm – will have a videographer present so bring stories on how to green healthcare

Georgetown Climate Center – looking for beta testers for their new website
