Overall\, sample-specific\, and feature-specific correlations were strong to moderate between blood and the non-invasive biomatrices. Fourteen significant features were annotated\, noting metabolites directly reflective of e-cigarette vapor exposure and metabolites of dopamine and oxidative stress\, likely representing downstream effects of exposure. Most parents began vaping to stop smoking and described vaping as a minor health hazard or not a hazard. Parent vapers described the “power of addiction”\, “the appeal of vaping”\, and a “cycle of judgement”.

DESCRIPTION:March 24th\, 2022 \n \nANHE Research Forum – March 24 at 3pm ET\nTitle: Household Emergency Preparedness\nSpeaker: Tara Heagele\, PhD\, RN\, EMT\, Assistant Professor at The City University of New York’s Hunter College School of Nursing in New York\, NY.\nDr. Heagele started her program of research by exploring the household emergency preparedness activities of elderly and medically frail community members qualitatively with the hope of better understanding the reasons why people do or do not prepare for disasters to inform policy. She is especially interested in the role that nurses have in mobilizing the community to prepare for and recover from disasters. She hopes that her disaster nursing research will ultimately save lives and promote disaster-related community resilience. In this presentation\, Dr. Heagele will discuss the evolution of her program of research\, describing the findings from three of her studies\, and providing implications for practice. DESCRIPTION:Kim Larson\, RN\, PhD\, MPH\, FNAP is a professor at East Carolina University College of Nursing in Greenville\, North Carolina \nTitle: Safe Drinking Water Study in Guatemala \nContaminated drinking water contributes to child mortality. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Guatemala to examine a community engagement (CE) strategy\, a monetary donation for a water filter. Water filters were distributed to households in four villages; three villages (n = 38) participated in the CE strategy (intervention) and one village (n = 56) did not (control). One-year later we surveyed study households on family health and water filter use. Intervention households had almost five times higher odds (OR = 4.7\, p = 0.022) of having a working water filter. She endeavors to improve disaster competencies among nurses\, willingness to report to duty after a disaster\, and emergency preparedness of all.  Her research involves emergency shelter placement\, community health issues to include emergency preparedness and response\, resilience\, and most recently\, COVID-19.  Research involving emergency preparedness centers on investigating response measures inclusive of individuals and populations with access and functional needs as well as resiliency among populations and the impact health care providers have on preparedness levels.  She investigates measures to improve emergency preparedness and response among health care professionals and preparedness levels among vulnerable citizens. In this presentation\, Dr. McNeill will discuss the evolution of her program of research\, describing the findings from several of her studies\, and providing implications for practice. Participants will learn about emergency preparedness and the importance of educating clients and patients on how to become prepared for emergencies\, and the impact a healthcare provider can make in emergency preparedness among vulnerable clients and patients. Finally\, resources for nurses to educate themselves on emergency preparedness and response topics will be discussed.

In addition\, Dr Huntington-Moskos is part of a research team working to assess residential exposure to cleaning/disinfecting products among adults with asthma and the impact on asthma symptoms. This presentation will discuss the challenges and lessons learned during integration of an air quality monitor\, spirometer\, and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to assess residential air quality and asthma symptoms among adults with asthma. \n

DESCRIPTION:ANHE Research Forum Monthly Call – May 25\, 2023 – 3pm ET \n \nSpeaker: Teresa Dodd-Butera\, PhD; RN/DABAT \nTitle: Environmental Health Emergencies: Risks to the Maternal-Fetal Dyad \nClimate change may contribute\, in part\, to the intensity and frequency of environmental health emergencies. These disasters are complex events\, and require individual\, community\, and systems level strategies. CO poisoning can occur in the aftermath of environmental emergencies\, such as wildfires and winter storms\, related to power losses and makeshift heating and cooking appliances. The maternal – fetal environment is particularly vulnerable to CO poisoning. Evidence in the literature will be presented\, along with specific case studies from the California Poison Control System. DESCRIPTION:The Disposal of Medical Waste in West Africa: An Environmental and Occupational Health Challenge\n \nLaura Ridge\, PhD\, RN\nMarch 28\, 2024 at 3pm ET\nAccording to the United Nations Environment Programme\, in 2020\, COVID-associated healthcare waste alone was 3.4 kg per person per day globally. It was about 2.5 kg per bed per day in developing countries. Dr. Laura Jean Ridge will discuss her research on the occupational health of healthcare workers in West Africa\, particularly in Liberia and Ghana. Dr. Ridge is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing. She has received funding from the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety and was a member of the 2023 cohort of the Environmental Health Research Institute for Nurse and Clinician Scientists™. Dr. Ridge is a nurse practitioner who earned her Master’s in Adult Primary Care from Columbia University (2010). She provided primary and HIV-oriented care in New York City for five years before her PhD at New York University. \nRegister Here\n1 Nursing Continuing Education (CE) credit will be available for those who complete an evaluation and receive at least 80% on the post-test.
