SUMMARY:Join ANHE Practice Forum for Rethink Plastic
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution is a global crisis affecting the health of the planet and all life on Earth from plankton to humans. Like climate change\, plastic pollution is a result of a dedicated effort by the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries to exploit a natural resource to unnatural consequences. This webinar will explore the health implications of plastics and options for effective change. \nPresented by Speaker\, Sandra R. Curtis\, PhD\nSandra R. Curtis has been a Director for Innovative Projects for the past six years at Plastic Pollution Coalition. Dr. Curtis initiated the organization’s efforts to bring awareness to the health hazards of plastic. \nAfter this free webinar participants will be able to:\n1) Describe the environmental and health impacts of plastic within the context of climate change\, with a specific focus will be on single-use plastic.\n2) Review the health implications of plastic throughout the lifecycle starting with extraction to production\, use\, and disposal. \nThis course (Rethink Plastic) is approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses\, Provider Number CEP17198 for  1 contact hour.

SUMMARY:Sigma Pre-Conference Event: Creating Healthy Environments Through Climate Action: Nursing's Pivotal Role
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is identified by the World Health Organization as one of the most urgent global health challenges for the next decade. Globally\, we are witnessing and experiencing impacts on health\, livelihoods\, and communities as a result of climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic has also underscored the interconnectedness of human and environmental health and emphasized how existing inequities influence outcomes. \nNurses are becoming increasingly more interested in learning about climate change and its related health impacts\, as well as their role in addressing this issue through their own actions and supporting equitable climate solutions in their professional associations/clinics/hospitals and with policymakers. As a prominent component of the health sector workforce\, nurses can play a vital role in promoting understanding of climate change as a health issue\, advancing practice to prevent and protect against health threats\, and in advocating for health protective policies. \nThis comprehensive training\, hosted in partnership with the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments  includes a mixture of information sharing and hands on practice to build knowledge\, skill\, and confidence following the format below: \n\nLearn about the state of the science on climate change\, climate impacts on health\, and equity considerations across populations\nGain confidence in talking about climate change from a nursing perspective\nIdentify the scope of climate solutions available through exploration of case studies\nExplore actionable opportunities to be a climate champion in your communities and practice settings\nMeet allies and collaborators advocating for climate health\n\nThis course is pending approval by the California Board of Registered Nurses\, Provider Number CEP17198 for 3 contact hours. \nREAD MORE AND REGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:ANHE Research Forum Monthly Call - March 2022
DESCRIPTION:March 24th\, 2022 \n \nANHE Research Forum – March 24 at 3pm ET\nTitle: Household Emergency Preparedness\nSpeaker: Tara Heagele\, PhD\, RN\, EMT\, Assistant Professor at The City University of New York’s Hunter College School of Nursing in New York\, NY.\nDr. Heagele started her program of research by exploring the household emergency preparedness activities of elderly and medically frail community members qualitatively with the hope of better understanding the reasons why people do or do not prepare for disasters to inform policy. She is especially interested in the role that nurses have in mobilizing the community to prepare for and recover from disasters. She hopes that her disaster nursing research will ultimately save lives and promote disaster-related community resilience. In this presentation\, Dr. Heagele will discuss the evolution of her program of research\, describing the findings from three of her studies\, and providing implications for practice. Participants will learn the barriers and facilitators of adequate household emergency preparedness\, how to measure household emergency preparedness\, and how to implement a nurse-led household emergency preparedness intervention targeting community members. \nJoin Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89432962044

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Climate Crisis Threats to Pregnancy and Newborn Health
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nEnvironmental crises have a significant impact on reproductive and maternal health. Scientific research and the experiences of pregnant people\, families and the health workers that serve them provide increasing evidence of the effects of wildfires\, extreme heat\, and other climate impacts\, on pregnancy health. Epidemiologic studies link exposure to both extreme heat and wildfire smoke to increased risk of poor maternal health and adverse birth outcomes including preterm birth\, low birth weight and stillbirth. Little is in place to try and manage these emerging threats. \nInterventions are needed to prevent the climate crisis from deepening the unjust racial and other inequities that center the US’ maternal health crisis. Maternal and infant outcomes are worse in the United States than in other industrialized nations\, with black and brown people being disproportionately affected. Including climate change in how we understand maternal and newborn health unearths multiple intersecting vulnerabilities driven by systemic racism and other marginalization. Attention to climate change and the effects of environmental crises on maternal and newborn health is essential to standing up equitable and just sexual and reproductive health policies and programs. \nThis webinar is designed to provide expert insights into how extreme heat and wildfire exposure affect maternal health and pregnancy outcomes. Presentations will provide key insights into the latest research on these emerging reproductive justice problems. \nNursing CE and CME credits will be available for this webinar. \nObjectives:  \n\nApply a reproductive justice framework to climate change\nReview selected studies that increase our knowledge related to the impact of climate change on maternal-child health\nIdentify specific actions that can be implemented in practice to assess risk related to climate change.\nDiscuss policy strategies that can be used to mitigate the effect of climate change on maternal-child health.\n\nREGISTER HERE:  https://marchofdimes.org/EnvironmentalHealth \nLaTricea Adams is the founder CEO and president of Black Millennials for Flint a national grassroots\, environmental justice and civil rights organization with the purpose of bringing like-minded organizations together to collectively take action and advocate against the crisis of lead exposure specifically in African American & Latinx communities throughout the nation.. \nTara Marko is a PhD candidate at Washington State University (WSU) College of Nursing and has been awarded an NIH F31 Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award for her current dissertation research titled: Effects to Neonatal Outcomes After In Utero Wildfire Smoke Exposure. \nNate DeNicola is a board-certified Ob/Gyn at Johns Hopkins Health System in Washington\, DC and Chair of Telehealth for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and leads their current work on innovation.

SUMMARY:ANHE Research Forum Monthly Call - April 2022
DESCRIPTION:Kim Larson\, RN\, PhD\, MPH\, FNAP is a professor at East Carolina University College of Nursing in Greenville\, North Carolina \nTitle: Safe Drinking Water Study in Guatemala \nContaminated drinking water contributes to child mortality. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Guatemala to examine a community engagement (CE) strategy\, a monetary donation for a water filter. Water filters were distributed to households in four villages; three villages (n = 38) participated in the CE strategy (intervention) and one village (n = 56) did not (control). One-year later we surveyed study households on family health and water filter use. Intervention households had almost five times higher odds (OR = 4.7\, p = 0.022) of having a working water filter. Interventions that incorporate ownership might sustain safe drinking water initiatives. \nRegister in advance for this month’s webinar! 1 Nursing Continuing Education credit will be awarded to those who complete the evaluation and earn 80% or above on the webinar post-test.\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0pdOuhqDkqHtAqY6rCEyFxILLkxs5OYnZ-
