SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Climate Crisis Threats to Pregnancy and Newborn Health
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nEnvironmental crises have a significant impact on reproductive and maternal health. Scientific research and the experiences of pregnant people\, families and the health workers that serve them provide increasing evidence of the effects of wildfires\, extreme heat\, and other climate impacts\, on pregnancy health. Epidemiologic studies link exposure to both extreme heat and wildfire smoke to increased risk of poor maternal health and adverse birth outcomes including preterm birth\, low birth weight and stillbirth. Little is in place to try and manage these emerging threats. \nInterventions are needed to prevent the climate crisis from deepening the unjust racial and other inequities that center the US’ maternal health crisis. Maternal and infant outcomes are worse in the United States than in other industrialized nations\, with black and brown people being disproportionately affected. Including climate change in how we understand maternal and newborn health unearths multiple intersecting vulnerabilities driven by systemic racism and other marginalization. Attention to climate change and the effects of environmental crises on maternal and newborn health is essential to standing up equitable and just sexual and reproductive health policies and programs. \nThis webinar is designed to provide expert insights into how extreme heat and wildfire exposure affect maternal health and pregnancy outcomes. DESCRIPTION:Kim Larson\, RN\, PhD\, MPH\, FNAP is a professor at East Carolina University College of Nursing in Greenville\, North Carolina \nTitle: Safe Drinking Water Study in Guatemala \nContaminated drinking water contributes to child mortality. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Guatemala to examine a community engagement (CE) strategy\, a monetary donation for a water filter. Water filters were distributed to households in four villages; three villages (n = 38) participated in the CE strategy (intervention) and one village (n = 56) did not (control). One-year later we surveyed study households on family health and water filter use. Intervention households had almost five times higher odds (OR = 4.7\, p = 0.022) of having a working water filter. McNeill\, PhD\, MSN\, RN \nProfessor\, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs\, Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing \nThe University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center\, Oklahoma City\, Oklahoma \nTitle: Impact of Healthcare Providers on Emergency Preparedness Among Vulnerable Clients \nDr. McNeill’s program of research involves emergency preparedness and response of nurses as well as individuals in the community and the households they live in\, particularly vulnerable populations. She endeavors to improve disaster competencies among nurses\, willingness to report to duty after a disaster\, and emergency preparedness of all.  Her research involves emergency shelter placement\, community health issues to include emergency preparedness and response\, resilience\, and most recently\, COVID-19.  Research involving emergency preparedness centers on investigating response measures inclusive of individuals and populations with access and functional needs as well as resiliency among populations and the impact health care providers have on preparedness levels.  She investigates measures to improve emergency preparedness and response among health care professionals and preparedness levels among vulnerable citizens. In this presentation\, Dr. McNeill will discuss the evolution of her program of research\, describing the findings from several of her studies\, and providing implications for practice. Participants will learn about emergency preparedness and the importance of educating clients and patients on how to become prepared for emergencies\, and the impact a healthcare provider can make in emergency preparedness among vulnerable clients and patients. Finally\, resources for nurses to educate themselves on emergency preparedness and response topics will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:10/5 – PFAS: What is it and why should we be concerned?\nOverview \nDr. Anderko will be introducing the chemical family called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, including where they are found\, potential health effects and why health providers should consider integrating this information into their clinical practice. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Anderko is an environmental health nurse consultant and co-director of the Federal Region 3 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) of Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing\, Villanova University. She has consulted with health providers and communities about potential health effects and risk reduction strategies for PFAS. She is working to develop report-back strategies geared towards adolescents\, with the goal of building environmental health literacy and promoting positive health behavior change. In addition\, Dr Huntington-Moskos is part of a research team working to assess residential exposure to cleaning/disinfecting products among adults with asthma and the impact on asthma symptoms. This presentation will discuss the challenges and lessons learned during integration of an air quality monitor\, spirometer\, and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to assess residential air quality and asthma symptoms among adults with asthma. \n

DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be at this WED 7pm on Nov 9th \nVIA ZOOM: \n https://usfca.zoom.us/j/81695024723 \n\nAGENDA: \nIntroductions \nDiscussion: \nITEM 1 \nA Nurses Food / Ag Pledge \n\nEat more plant-based and whole grain meals\nSet a preference for organic food purchasing\, whenever possible\nLearn where our food comes from\nWaste less food\n\nThere are solid evidence and fabulous resources to support such a Pledge.  Each of these pledge items can engender rich conversations about the inter-relationships between choices and human and ecological health (currently being framed as “Planetary Health”). \nPlease join us as we discuss ideas of how to engage nurses \nITEM 2 \nBrief introduction to the Farm Bill for 2023. \nIn the coming year\, the federal Farm Bill will be a food security/food justice and agriculture priority.  The WIC and SNAP programs are part of the Farm Bill\, as are major farm subsidies\, and the bill is reauthorized every 5 – 6 years.  One way we can begin to understand the bill is to read the primer The Farm Bill: A Citizen’s Guide by by Daniel Imhoff (Author)\, and Christina Badaracco  (Author)   We encourage you to read the book before the December 7th meeting when we will have a broader discussion about possible ANHE engagement with Farm Bill advocacy.

DESCRIPTION:The beauty products marketed to Black women are among the most toxic in the cosmetics industry and are contributing to an increased risk of breast\, ovarian and uterine cancer\, reproductive harm\, and more. We will discuss how nurses can talk with patients about the chemicals of concern in beauty and personal care products marketed to Black women – what they are\, where they are\, the negative health impacts and where to find safer alternatives. We will also provide tips and resources that nurses can share with their patients to help them avoid these toxic exposures. \nFacilitator: Janet Nudelman\, MA\, Director of BCPP’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics \nSpeaker: Dr. Astrid Williams\, DrPH\, MPH\, Environmental Justice Program Manager\, Black Women for Wellness\nBio: Astrid is a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Public Health earning a doctorate in public health and Master of Public Health in Health Promotion & Education. She received her undergraduate degree in psychobiology from the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA). She currently serves as the Environmental Justice manager for Black Women for Wellness and oversees their beauty justice work. \nSpeaker: Tianna Shaw-Wakeman\, MS\, Environmental Justice Program Lead\, Black Women for Wellness\nBio: Tianna holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in social entrepreneurship from the University of Southern California where she graduated as the first Black University Valedictorian for the Class of 2021.
