SUMMARY:ANHE Global Nurses Climate Change Committee Monthly Call - September 2021
DESCRIPTION:ANHE Global Nurses Climate Change Committee: September 16th at 5pm ET/2pm PST on Zoom. Lisa Del Buono will join the September call as we explore the relative effectiveness of a variety of policies from electrifying our transportation system to improving energy efficiency and regenerative agriculture using MIT’s EN-ROADS global climate action simulator. At a time when Congress is deciding the best ways to address the climate crisis with equity in mind\, Lisa believes that health professionals should support all the tools in the toolbox\, including a price on carbon designed in ways that would benefit those who have suffered disproportionately from the burning and extraction of fossil fuels. Lisa is a recently retired doc who is one of the State Coordinators for Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL)\, co-leads the CCL Health Action Team\, and is the Executive Director of Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action (MiCCA).

SUMMARY:Research Working Group Monthly Call - September 2021
DESCRIPTION:Research Working Group: September 23rd at 3pm ET/12pm PST on Zoom \n \nGibran C. Mancus\, PhD\, RN is an Assistant Professor\nat The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing in Tuscaloosa. \nTitle: Exploring greenspace\, leisure time physical activity and mental health in the southeastern United States. \nThere is a growing body of evidence that vegetation where people live is associated with positive mental health. Little is known about the effect these relationships in southern states with more rural population. This study explored the complex relationships between poor mental health\, leisure time physical activity and enhanced vegetation index aggregated at the census tract in Alabama. We found those living with more greenness were less likely to have excessive poor mental health days and less likely to not engage in leisure time physical activity.

SUMMARY:Guillaume Chevance\, PhD Presentation: Thinking Health-related Behaviors in a Climate Change Context
DESCRIPTION:On October 7th at 11am\, Dr. Guillaume Chevance will give a Grand Rounds presentation on: Thinking Health-related Behaviors in a Climate Change Context. \nHuman activities have changed the biosphere so profoundly over the past two centuries that human induced climate change is now posing serious health-related treats to the current and future generations. Rapid actions from all scientific fields are needed to contribute to both the mitigation and adaption to climate change. This presentation will discuss the bi-directional associations between climate change effects (i.e.\, rising average temperatures\, natural disasters\, air pollution\, rising sea level) and health-related behaviors\, as well as a set of key actions/propositions for the behavioral medicine community. \nTo register\, click here.\nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Guillaume Chevance has a background in sport sciences. He received his PhD in Human Movement Sciences from the University of Montpellier (France) in 2017. The objective of his thesis was to understand the role of specific motivational factors in the adoption and maintenance of an active lifestyle during and after rehabilitation programs. After his PhD\, Dr. Chevance started a postdoc at the University of California San Diego (US) in a team interested in the design of eHealth interventions\, and notably recognized for their applications of control system engineering methods to the development of apps supporting behavior change. Dr. Chevance then joined ISGlobal (Barcelona\, Spain)\, a leading European institution in Global/Planetary Health\, in October 2020 as a tenure-track assistant research professor and head of the eHealth group. He is interested in the dynamics of health behavior change in the context of climatic changes. For that purpose\, he uses digital technologies (i.e.\, accelerometers\, smartphones\, mobile apps\, online datasets) to better understand\, and sometimes influence\, what is going on in our daily lives. \nFollow Dr. Chevance on twitter: https://twitter.com/GuillChevance

SUMMARY:ANHE Research Working Group Monthly Call - October 2021
DESCRIPTION:Research Working Group: October 28th at 3pm ET/12pm PST on Zoom. \nOur speaker is Aubrey Doede\, PhD RN. Aubrey is a Postdoctoral Fellow\, Cardiovascular Epidemiology in the Department of Family Medicine & Public Health at UC San Diego School of Medicine. \nTitle: Effects of drought and airborne dust on childhood asthma in Imperial County\, CA \nThe Imperial Valley region of Southeastern California is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the state and has the highest rates of childhood asthma in California. The lack of precipitation in the Imperial Valley has caused the water level of the Salton Sea to recede to a record low in the modern era. The diminishing water level in an already-arid climate pose a risk of exposing previously-sequestered toxic chemicals to open air\, which can adversely affect lung health. Future droughts and heatwaves are expected to rise in frequency and severity\, disproportionately affecting those impacted by financial and health disparities. The current research uses meteorological techniques to determine the extent to which airborne dust from the Salton Sea is responsible for the increased rate of pediatric emergency department visits due to asthma complications. \n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting:    https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89432962044 \nMeeting ID: 894 3296 2044\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,89432962044# US (Washington DC)\n+13126266799\,\,89432962044# US (Chicago)
