Let’s give a round of applause 👏👏👏 We Let’s give a round of applause 👏👏👏

We are excited to announce ANHE board member Azita Amiri has recently been accepted in the 2022 class of fellows in the American Academy of Nursing!

The Academy selected 250 nurses who are leaders from 35 different states for this year’s cohort.

The nurses who are selected are “leaders who are experts in policy, research, administration, practice, and academia that champion health and wellness, locally and globally.”

We are happy to see Azita’s passion and dedication being recognized! Read more about the fellows with the link in bio or drop a comment bellow to say congrats! 😊

They set the goal for the initiative to make it that 50% of cars and light truck sales in 2030 will be zero-emission electric vehicles, and also laid out timelines for vehicle rules.

To meet the goal, we need to keep taking action. One way you can take action today, is by submitting the Zeroing in on Healthy Air petition. Link in bio 👆

And when it comes to the rise in asthma cases in our country, there are a variety of factors that play a part in why and who end up getting asthma from exposure to air pollution.

ANHE member Atenas Mena breaks down the backstory of cases in her op-ed recently published in El Diario. It’s a must read to learn about how inequities and systemic racism contribute to the cases which could be otherwise preventable with modern technology replacing the source of a lot of the pollution: heavy and medium-duty vehicles.

Nurse Theresa Watts had her op-ed piece on sustainable transportation for cleaner air published earlier this month and we recommend checking out the article!

In the piece, nurse Theresa Watts explains how major roadways with heavy duty and commercial vehicles affect the health of many people. In Nevada (and throughout the US as a whole) many people live close enough to major freeways to have their health impacted by the constant exhaust of these vehicles. Want to know more and what can be done about it?

Advocate for change, and your efforts will be rewa Advocate for change, and your efforts will be rewarded! ✊

We see an example of this in California where major legislation was recently passed and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that will be the nation's toughest restriction of single use plastics. 🥤🧴

Companies themselves will have to cut down on use of plastic in the next decade, leaving less burden on the consumer end. Stopping pollution at the source is an effective way to deal with the issue, as there is a limit to how much plastic truly gets recycled in cities. ♻️

We are happy to see such a big push for change get major and state level support! 🎉

Let’s give a round of applause 👏👏👏 Ann Let’s give a round of applause 👏👏👏

Ann Warneka, one of our 2022 - 2023 ANHE Environmental Health Nurse Fellows, is the recipient of the UL Stewardship Award given by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses.

This award is given to those who “protect and promote the well-being of workers, ensure organizational compliance and peace of mind, and drive measurable business improvement”

Ann has experience as a travel nurse and as an Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) manager, having worked with various clinics. But what makes Ann really stand out is an approved tool she built to assess skin care for workers dealing with wet work symptoms. ❗️

Congratulations Ann Warneka on your outstanding accomplishments! 🥳🏅
🦷 Did you know that mercury is still being used 🦷 Did you know that mercury is still being used in silver tooth fillings? 🦷

Inequity in dental care allows for the continued use of unhealthy dental practices among marginalized groups. Mercury from amalgam can be absorbed into the body and cause long term serious health risks. It is especially important to make sure kids are not exposed to mercury, as they have the highest risks of adverse effects, specifically cognitive and neurological impairment.

Amalgam fillings are bad for both people and the environment. The FDA has already asked dentists to stop using amalgam but it is still being used. Read more about the topic in the recently published article by Dr. Rueben C. Warren and Dr. Mark Mitchell in Health Affairs.

California is making waves again 🌊 The CA Legi California is making waves again 🌊

The CA Legislature has adopted a $300 billion budget that includes historic investments in the state’s school meal program to expand healthy, plant-based meal options. Students in California will now have more opportunities to eat green 🥬🥑🥕🌽🌿

With this budget, California becomes the first state to provide public funding for plant-based school meals!

The investments they will be making include:

🍏 $100 million to support schools in procuring plant-based foods, as well as sustainably produced foods, California-grown foods, and foods to accommodate students with religious or other restricted diets.

🍏 $600 million to upgrade school kitchen infrastructure and to train and compensate food service workers, including to prepare plant-based meals and increase scratch-cooking, an important facilitator for expanding healthy, plant-forward menus.

We hope other states take notice and are able to go green in the school kitchen too 😊🌱

We’d like to take a moment to highlight our Stud We’d like to take a moment to highlight our Student Nurse Environmental Health Leadership Award recipient

As a recently graduated student nurse, Amelia Kirby is already making big moves. Soon she will be moving to Denver, CO to work in the Emergency Department at a local hospital. With previous experience in the non-profit sector, Amelia was looking for a career path that would allow her to help people in a more personal way which is what led her to nursing. Amelia has helped lead a diverse team to develop the nursing version of the Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC), a tool created in 2019 by University of California San Francisco medical students as a way to evaluate individual programs in integrating planetary health concepts. This year we are proud to award Amelia Kirby with the Student Nurse Environmental Health Leadership Award in partnership with the National Student Nurses Association.

Congrats Amelia Kirby! And thank you for all your efforts in establishing the importance of climate health within the field of nursing 🌿🌎🏨

And it all starts with cleaner vehicles. When traditional school buses are replaced with an electric alternative, students no longer are forced to be exposed to diesel emissions coming from their daily commute.

Last week, our intern Jacob checked out the zero-emission, electric-powered alternatives in person at the US Capitol. GreenPower Motor Company had a showcase allowing us to see firsthand what cleaner transportation looks like. 🚌 🌱
