New York has become the first U.S. state to impose a one-year moratorium on new large-scale data centers, citing concerns over rising electricity costs, water use, and impacts on local communities as AI infrastructure rapidly expands. The pause will give regulators time to assess how these facilities affect New Yorkers before approving additional projects.

This week, ANHE Executive Director Katie Huffling joined the Health Equity and Environment Action League’s inaugural roundtable on extreme heat and public health. The conversation highlighted the urgent need to protect programs like LIHEAP, which helps millions of households afford heating, cooling, weatherization and emergency energy support.

Nurses see firsthand how extreme heat, pollution and weakened environmental protections affect patients and communities. As Congress prepares to leave Washington, D.C. for August recess, this is an important opportunity to make sure lawmakers hear directly from nurses.
