The effects of a climate disaster do not end when the immediate danger passes. Survivors may face grief, displacement, health concerns, and a long, complicated recovery.

A recent New York Times Magazine story follows people affected by extreme heat, wildfires, floods, and hurricanes who found one another through Extreme Weather Survivors. They share practical guidance and offer support grounded in firsthand experience.

Climate and health education belongs in every part

Climate and health education belongs in every part of the health workforce. Last Thursday, Milagros Elia represented ANHE at Climate Week NYC on the panel “Embedding Climate and Health Education Across the Health Workforce” at the New York Academy of Medicine.

Nurses see how climate change affects health in the communities they serve. Bringing that knowledge into health professional education can help more clinicians recognize these risks and respond to them in their practice. Thank you to Milagros and her fellow panelists for advancing this conversation.

Fuel economy standards affect the air our patients

Fuel economy standards affect the air our patients and communities breathe. When vehicles use less fuel, they can produce less pollution and contribute less to the climate crisis. Nurses see the health consequences of polluted air, including its effects on people living with asthma and heart disease.

Proposed changes to the Toxic Substances Control A

Proposed changes to the Toxic Substances Control Act could weaken the safeguards used to assess chemicals before they enter the market, putting children at greater risk of exposure to substances that can harm their health and development.

More than 30 scientists, health professionals, and public health advocates signed a Project TENDR letter urging the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee to hear from children’s health experts before advancing the proposal. ANHE Executive Director Katie Huffling, RN, MS, CNM, was among the signers.

Nurses see why preventing harmful exposures matters. Families should be able to trust that the products they use have been evaluated with children’s health in mind. As Congress considers changes to chemical safety law, the people who study and care for children affected by toxic exposures deserve a place in the conversation.

A new United Nations report is calling for urgent

A new United Nations report is calling for urgent action on PFAS, finding that these “forever chemicals” pose a profound threat to human rights, human health, and the environment.

The UN Special Rapporteur calls for an immediate ban on all non-essential uses of PFAS, along with stronger action at every level to prevent further pollution and protect communities from ongoing exposure.

For nurses and health professionals, the message is clear: preventing PFAS exposure is a public health priority.

Nurses know that clean air and a stable climate are public health priorities.

ANHE is speaking out against the EPA’s repeal of the 2024 Power Plant standards, which were projected to reduce harmful pollution and prevent premature deaths, asthma cases, hospital visits, and missed school and workdays.

“Repealing these protections will not make families safer or healthier,” said ANHE Executive Director Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN.
