ANHE Regional Forum: Central East

ANHE has over 600 members in Delaware, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky! Let’s join together to protect clean water rights for our communities. We host events, share information about what’s going on, and create opportunities for nurses to talk to their legislators and each other about all things environmental health.

What We’re Working On

Tell the Department of Defense: Ohio Families Don’t Want PFAS Incineration!

The Pentagon wants to burn toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” at a hazardous waste incineration plant in East Liverpool—threatening the health of families in Ohio and neighboring Pennsylvania and West Virginia. But it’s not yet a done deal. Moms in the Ohio River Valley are speaking out against toxic air pollution in our region.

Tell Governor Morrisey and the WVDEP: Our Families Want Clean Air and Water!

West Virginia Nurses are working to curtail the buildout of plastics facilities in the Ohio River Valley while also advocating for community health protections from existing petrochemical operations. We are currently calling on Governor Morrisey and the Department of Environmental Protection to stop petrochemical expansion and keep out-of-state corporations from polluting our air and water.

Highlights

Delaware River Valley Clinicians Qualitative PFAS Health Study

A DrPH student is inviting community-based primary care clinicians who work in the Delaware River Valley to participate in a study to assess how the ATSDR clinical information factsheet is used in real-world applications of PFAS clinical prevention and management for children.

Participation involves being interviewed once, for approximately one hour.

Your insights will contribute to our understanding of the evolving needs of community-based primary care clinicians working with PFAS, potential equity gaps, and policy challenges. Your participation is completely voluntary. There is no compensation for participation.

If you are interested in participating or have any questions about the study, please contact Emma Pennea at penne...@gmail.com.

Join us for Pennsylvania’s Clean Energy Future: How Climate, Energy, and Health Intersect!

October 20, 2025 – 12 PM EST

Speaker: Rob Altenburg, Senior Director for Energy and Climate, PennFuture

Pennsylvania stands at a crossroads when it comes to jobs, health, and climate. The IRA has brought historic investments in clean energy and climate resilience – creating opportunities for healthier communities and stronger local economies. However, H.R. 1, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” now threatens to rollback these gains by reducing or eliminating the clean energy tax credits that families and businesses count on to lower costs, create jobs, and improve health. This educational event will unpack what the IRA means for Pennsylvania’s communities, highlight the risks posed by H. R. 1, and explore how state level action can help protect and maintain clean energy progress. Attendees will leave with knowledge and tools to understand what’s at stake, how federal and state policies shape our future, and how Pennsylvanians can take action to advance climate and health opportunities across the Commonwealth.
