Mark your calendars! The Campaign for Healthier Solutions National Week of Action is this December 2-8, 2024! Our friends at the Campaign for Healthier Solutions are working hard to get toxic products off of dollar store shelves in order to protect workers and environmental justice communities, and they need our help to pressure major dollar stores!

Ways to take action December 2-8:

1. Visit your local dollar store and deliver a letter to management. Ask the store manager to send the letter to headquarters.

On November 22, 2024 the U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed updated
standards for NOx pollution from gas-red power plants for the first time since 2006.

The proposal would protect people from nitrogen oxides (NOx) – contaminants that are emitted by gas power plants and contribute to particle pollution and smog.

In response to the EPA’s announcement, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environment’s (ANHE) Executive Director Katie Hufing, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN issued the following statement:

“The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments supports the EPA proposed NOx pollution standard for new gas-red power plants as an important step to reduce dangerous emissions and improve health. However, this has been long overdue in being reviewed, and, current NOx limits are now out of date. “Nurses understand that dangerous NOx pollution from power plants contributes to smog and soot pollution, which increases the public health risk of heart disease, stroke, and respiratory disease. These impacts disproportionately affect communities living near power plants who have historically borne the brunt of air pollution. More must be done to protect people and communities from dangerous NOx pollution. We strongly urge the EPA to finalize this standard as an important first step in protecting public health.”

The purpose of the toolkit is to provide useful information to guide clinical practice and decision making. Patients, community members or colleagues may present with questions around PFAS exposures, PFAS testing and/or results, health implications, and what actions they can take to reduce exposures. We hope this toolkit will be a valuable resource for providing guidance around these questions.

"The presence of nurses at COP29 is absolutely critical so that we can advocate for health to be included in climate change policies. We are also able to meet up with partners and collaborate on ways to push forward actions that mitigate climate change. Further, the conference is a chance to promote sustainable solutions for healthcare systems both in the US and globally."

🆕 @Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change’s latest report shows that while climate action is limited by a scarcity of funding, financial resources continue to be allocated to activities that harm health and hinder the transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

❌ These investments jeopardise people’s wellbeing, health and survival which heavily depend on phasing out fossil fuels
❌ These investments further escalate climate risks for future generations
❌ These investments set us up for financial turmoil as we pursue a liveable future

People’s health must be put front and centre of climate change policy to ensure the funding mechanisms protect wellbeing, reduce health inequities and maximise health gains, especially for the countries and communities that need it most.

Dr. Boyd is a Doctor of Nursing Practice and the Climate Adaptation, Resilience, and Public Health Extension Educator with the University of Minnesota Climate
Adaptation Partnership (MCAP). Before working in academia and community outreach,
he had experience as a pediatric hematology/oncology/solid organ transplant and adult
orthopedics registered nurse. He received his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from
the University of Minnesota in the Health Innovation and Leadership specialty, where he
focused his doctoral studies on Planetary Health, community climate adaptation and
resilience, and transformative systems change. In his current role, he works at the
intersection of climate and public health, developing climate adaptation projects for
communities, emergency management, and health professionals across Minnesota.

ANHE is at COP29! We spoke with Charlotte McArdle. Charlottle is a registered nurse and the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for Patient Safety and Improvement for National Health Service (NHS) England. Charlotte is leading policy work on same sex accommodation, care partners for patients, and a range of safety and improvement programs. Alongside this, Charlotte leads the nursing profession’s response to sustainable healthcare, recognizing the role nurses and midwives play to reduce climate change and make strong links between the health of the planet and the health of the population. She is at COP29 representing Sigma Nursing.

ANHE is at COP29! We spoke with Sue Anne Bell. Dr. Bell is a nurse scientist and family nurse practitioner, with expertise in disaster response, community health and emergency care. Her research focuses broadly on the health effects of disasters and the impact of climate change on human health within a health equity framework. She is particularly interested in the long-term impact of disasters on human’s health, in developing policy that protects and promotes health throughout the disaster management cycle, and in the relationship between community resilience, health disparities and disasters.

🎉 The 2024 Retailer Report Card is here!

🎁As you plan your holiday shopping, find out if your favorite retailer is committed to selling safer products or if it earned a place in the 2024 Toxic Hall of Shame.

🔍 Using a new grading system called The Four Essential Elements for a Safer Marketplace, we evaluated the largest retailers in the U.S. and Canada and found that most are failing to protect customers from toxic chemicals and plastics in their products and packaging. The average grade was a D+.

👎 Seventeen retailers earned failing grades, including 7-Eleven, Five Below, McDonald’s, LL Flooring, and Sally Beauty.

🏆 But Apple, Sephora, Target, and Walmart earned top grades, demonstrating that it IS possible for retailers to restrict toxic chemicals and advance safer solutions.

🖥️ As our recent report on recycled black plastics shows, when retailers don’t protect consumers from toxic chemicals and plastics, the results are troubling: toxic chemicals like flame retardants in our cookware, toys, take-out containers, and more.

ANHE is at COP29! We spoke with Imogen Stringer, registered nurse and the Head of Sustainability Education and Implementation Manager at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. She was previously a Chief Sustainability Officer’s Clinical Fellow, working nationally across the Chief Nursing Office and Greener NHS Team where she worked on a variety of projects including establishing IPC and Sustainability ‘exemplar sites’. In both roles Imogen has been and continues to be an advocate for collaboration across IPC and Sustainability teams.

"This year’s conference is extremely important for a couple reasons. First, we’re here advocating for the Biden administration to submit an ambitious NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) as part of the Paris Agreement by the end of their term. The second reason is related to climate finance. Countries will be agreeing to a new collective climate finance goal. Right now, the 100B per year that has been committed is NOT ENOUGH! So we are advocating for a much stronger and ambitious goal for countries to agree to. "

On Wednesday, we participated in "A Fast, Full, Fair, Funded, Feminist Fossil Fuel Phase-Out" alongside @ClimateActionNetwork and @CareAboutClimate. Together, we discussed the campaign and outlined what exactly is required to ensure an equitable and just fossil fuel phaseout. The campaign aims to influence US decision makers to end the era of fossil fuels, ensure a just transition, and pay a fair share of the costs of a global just transition from fossil fuel extraction.

The 2024 @Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report reveals that we are facing record-breaking health threats, yet climate change action is limited by a scarcity of funding.

Healing circles are safe havens and they help us step out of ordinary time into a safe and accepting environment in which we can explore our healing. Humans have gathered in circles and told stories around campfires since the beginning of fire. Today in circles, humans tell their stories and share their response patterns. In holding a safe container—a circle—nurses have the opportunity to provide an environment that allows individuals to share their stories while also examining their response patterns, and to bend the arc of their lives toward health and happiness while resting in the supportive community of others. In this process, nurse leaders of healing circles are rediscovering and reclaiming the joy that brought them into nursing, the joy that we experience when we are truly practicing nursing.

Our nurse leader for this Healing Circle will be Healing Circle host and trainer Catherine Dodd PhD, RN, FAAN. We hope that you can join us!

The climate crisis is here and now and it’s already costing us lives, health, and dollars. The outcome of the election means all the protections we’ve fought so hard for the last few years in tackling the climate crisis – protections that save thousands of lives saved through new pollution standards, create hundreds of thousands of jobs and invest billions of dollars in clean energy – are on the line. With lots to do before the end of the year and multiple major “must-pass” bills in Congress, the next two months will be a challenge for climate progress. We’re calling on Congress to stand strong for climate and reject any attempt to use these bills to erode climate progress.
