🌡️ Heat Safety at Work: A Call to Action 🌡️

Heat is a leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S. and a serious occupational hazard for millions of workers. While athletes have heat illness prevention guidelines, most U.S. workers lack formal protections.

In July 2024, OSHA proposed the first federal heat standard, “The Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings Rule.” This rule would protect ~36 million workers, potentially preventing up to 96% of heat-related illnesses and 100% of fatalities. Key provisions include:
✅ 80°F heat index: Access to water, break areas, and gradual workload adjustments.
✅ 90°F heat index: Mandatory rest breaks, hazard alerts, and heat illness monitoring.

Sports industry workers, like event staff and coaches, are particularly vulnerable due to protective gear and prolonged sun exposure. Collaboration between health professionals and safety experts is key to implementing these standards effectively.

Description: An overview of the scientific and medical evidence about lead, other heavy metals, and chemicals used in artificial turf and synthetic playground surfaces, and the impact of those exposures on children. The presentation will include the myths and realities regarding the benefits and risks of these products, whether used indoors or outdoors.

Webinar participants who complete the evaluation and obtain an 80% or higher on the course post-test will receive a certificate for 1 nursing contact hour!

About the Presenter: Dr. Diana Zuckerman, PhD, is President of the National Center for Health Research, a nonprofit public health think tank that conducts and analyzes research on a wide range of healthcare and health policy issues and uses the results to inform policies, programs, and services affecting the health of adults and children. She has testified about the safety and effectiveness of medical and consumer products before U.S. Congressional Committees; federal agencies; state legislators; the Canadian Parliament; and has briefed Canadian and European officials and nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and abroad.
