On Capitol Hill, July 21: Join 100 Health Professionals in Support of Joe Biden’s 100% Clean Energy Standard
July 21, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT
Are you a health professional concerned about the climate crisis and its impacts on health and the environment? If so, please RSVP to join 100 other health professionals in person on July 21st in Washington, DC. We’ll gather outdoors near the Capitol at Noon in support of 100% clean electricity by 2035 as part of the American Jobs Plan.
Investing in 100% clean energy by 2035 dramatically reduces air pollution, improves public health, and advances environmental justice. Researchers estimate that exposure to pollution, especially fine particulate matter, is responsible for more than 100,000 premature deaths each year. A clean energy standard would help avoid more than $1.7 trillion in health and environmental costs, including 93,000 avoided premature deaths, through 2050. In addition, there will be immediate reductions in the risk of cancers, respiratory disease, heart disease and stroke.
The burning of fossil fuels causes a wide range of negative impacts on human health and disproportionately burdens communities of color. Equity and justice must be at the core of climate investments. The American Jobs Plan targets 40 percent of the benefits of climate and clean infrastructure investments to disproportionately impacted communities, and invests in rural communities and workers who may lose jobs in the fossil fuel industry due to the transition to clean energy.
The time to act is now. On July 21st we will gather on the National Mall in the shadow of the Capitol Building to show our support for 100% clean electricity and the American Jobs Plan.
Co-sponsors of this event include Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, Medical Students for a Sustainable Future, Physicians for Social Responsibility and CCAN Action Fund.
If you aren’t able to make it in-person, you can show your support for a transition to 100% clean energy by adding your name to this petition letter here.
