In response to these White House announcements, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environment’s (ANHE) Executive Director Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN issued the following statement:

“Earth’s climate has entered a perilous term. The new administration has decided to officially disengage from global climate diplomacy through its Day 1 Executive Orders, ignoring the public health threats communities are already experiencing. While the Administration promises to disrupt the progress of clean energy, nurses know that this transition can’t be stopped.
President Trump’s announcements attacking EPA safeguards to reduce tailpipe pollution from the transportation sector will negatively impact the people who are the poorest and most marginalized, as well as the youngest in our society. These populations have done the least to contribute to the problem, yet they're already bearing the brunt of the impacts caused by air pollution due to vehicle emissions.

The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments strongly objects to these Executive Orders as direct assaults to our environment, climate and public health. The stakes for our planet and communities in which we live have never been higher.”

Last week, ANHE nurses Dr. Catherine Graeve and Mary Ellenberger gathered alongside others in Minnesota to urge legislators to continue support for Amara’s Law in Minnesota.

🌱 What is Amara’s Law? 🌍

In Minnesota, Amara’s Law addresses the widespread dangers of PFAS, or "forever chemicals," found in everyday products and the environment. Named after Amara Strande, who passed away from cancer linked to PFAS exposure, this law focuses on banning nonessential uses of PFAS to protect public health and the environment.

💔 Why it matters:

PFAS are toxic and don’t break down, contaminating water, soil, and our bodies. Amara’s story highlights the urgent need for action to prevent future harm.

💪 The impact:
By restricting PFAS, Minnesota is leading the fight for cleaner air, water, and a healthier future for everyone.

Let’s honor Amara’s legacy by advocating for safer policies and holding polluters accountable. 🌊🌿

Kicking off 2025, the podcast welcomes Sarah Bucic, MSN, RN, PMHCNS-BC, to discuss her impactful work with the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE). As rising temperatures, widespread “forever chemicals” (PFAS) in workplaces, and ongoing challenges to clean water access create new safety risks, occupational health nurses (OHNs) are on the front lines of protecting patient and community health. Despite the challenges, there is hope. Bucic shares ANHE’s valuable, free resources for OHNs, highlights the changes ANHE has already driven, and dives into some of today’s most pressing occupational health issues.

Last fall, ANHE urged EPA to continue with rigorous evaluation of vinyl chloride and its health impacts under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). This week, EPA designated five chemicals as High-Priority Substances for risk evaluation including vinyl chloride.
