ANHE is at COP29!

Hear from Cara Cook, ANHE's Director of Programs, as she lays out why this year's conference is so important and what ANHE is hoping to accomplish during our time here.

"This year’s conference is extremely important for a couple reasons. First, we’re here advocating for the Biden administration to submit an ambitious NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) as part of the Paris Agreement by the end of their term. The second reason is related to climate finance. Countries will be agreeing to a new collective climate finance goal. Right now, the 100B per year that has been committed is NOT ENOUGH! So we are advocating for a much stronger and ambitious goal for countries to agree to. "

On Wednesday, we participated in "A Fast, Full, Fair, Funded, Feminist Fossil Fuel Phase-Out" alongside @ClimateActionNetwork and @CareAboutClimate. Together, we discussed the campaign and outlined what exactly is required to ensure an equitable and just fossil fuel phaseout. The campaign aims to influence US decision makers to end the era of fossil fuels, ensure a just transition, and pay a fair share of the costs of a global just transition from fossil fuel extraction.

The 2024 @Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate C

The 2024 @Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report reveals that we are facing record-breaking health threats, yet climate change action is limited by a scarcity of funding.

This comes just weeks before COP29, dubbed the ‘finance COP’ – where the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance is due to be adopted, and arrangements for the Loss and Damage (L&D) Fund will be considered and approved.

Healing circles are safe havens and they help us step out of ordinary time into a safe and accepting environment in which we can explore our healing. Humans have gathered in circles and told stories around campfires since the beginning of fire. Today in circles, humans tell their stories and share their response patterns. In holding a safe container—a circle—nurses have the opportunity to provide an environment that allows individuals to share their stories while also examining their response patterns, and to bend the arc of their lives toward health and happiness while resting in the supportive community of others. In this process, nurse leaders of healing circles are rediscovering and reclaiming the joy that brought them into nursing, the joy that we experience when we are truly practicing nursing.

Our nurse leader for this Healing Circle will be Healing Circle host and trainer Catherine Dodd PhD, RN, FAAN. We hope that you can join us!

The outcome of the election means all the protections we’ve fought so hard for the last few years in tackling the climate crisis – protections that save thousands of lives saved through new pollution standards, create hundreds of thousands of jobs and invest billions of dollars in clean energy – are on the line. With lots to do before the end of the year and multiple major “must-pass” bills in Congress, the next two months will be a challenge for climate progress. Local experts and activists spoke at an event Tuesday praising the EPA’s finalization of its clean vehicle standards and encouraging Michiganders to adopt zero emission vehicles.

Cardiac ICU Nurse at Michigan Medicine, Founder of Climate Justice Nurse, and ANHE member, Mary-Jacqueline K. Muli, says she has been seeing the growing number of climate-related health conditions in youth, emphasizing the need for broader industry involvement.

A special word from Katie Huffling, Executive Director of ANHE:

In the wake of Tuesday's election results, I wanted to reach out to our many ANHE friends. I know that many of us are grieving and I hope you are making space to support your physical and mental health. A core value of ANHE is community and support of one another. Please join us in holding one another close and we are working on ways for ANHE nurses to come together in support of each other.

In the coming years the work of ANHE is going to be more important than ever. There are many times in the history of our country where amazing change has come from some really dark times. I truly believe that with nurses working together we can still make positive change and lay the groundwork for major transformations even in the light of these shifts in our country. Let us continue to come together in support of a healthy climate, environmental justice, clean water, and a world where every child is able to thrive.

ANHE will be organizing a healing circle in the near future.

On September 17, 2024, a Congressional briefing hi

On September 17, 2024, a Congressional briefing highlighting the severe health risks associated with paraquat, one of the most dangerous herbicides used in commercial agriculture was hosted. The event was organized by prominent advocacy groups such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, and the Environmental Working Group, with support from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

It shed light on the herbicide’s undeniable link to Parkinson’s disease and various cancers, especially among agricultural workers and communities living near farms. The discussion made it clear that immediate regulatory action is needed to protect public health.

Roughly 80% of healthcare’s oversized carbon footprint derives from the production, transportation, use, and disposal of a single-use medical supply chain. Yet as health care organizations try to practice ‘resource stewardship’ – that is, to move away from single-use disposable items toward sustainable use of durable items – they encounter widespread perceptions that disposability is a necessary virtue in modern health care. Caregivers, patients, and health-system managers fear that any move from disposability to sustainability must lead to trade-offs in safety (from infectious threats), efficacy (in pharmaceutical delivery) or efficiency (in cost-effectiveness).

This Levi Symposium will question these perceived trade-offs, disentangling legitimate evidential and moral reasoning from the inertia of convenience. Convening scholars and practitioners in bioethics, clinical practice, environmental justice, practice innovation, and health policy, we aim to host a multi-disciplinary exploration of how we can elucidate policy pathways that harmonize clinical safety, efficacy, and efficiency with sustainability

Environmental Health Project (EHP @Environmental Health Project) has recently launched a continuing education credit Health Professional Toolkit. The goal of the toolkit is to provide health professionals with up-to-date information and research on the impact of shale gas development on patients' and clients’ health. In using the toolkit, health professionals will be able to understand the existing research that links shale gas development to health impacts, recognize the potential impacts that shale gas development is having on patients’ and clients’ physical or mental health, and provide resources and recommendations for impacted patients and clients. '
