In Another Step to Protect Health & Climate, EPA Releases Proposal to
Reduce Carbon Pollution
[Washington, D.C.] Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a set of proposed rules with the goal of curbing emissions of carbon pollution from new and existing coal and gas plants. According to EPA reports, the proposed standards would avoid over 600 million metric tons of CO2 pollution, which is equivalent to reducing the annual emissions of roughly half the cars in the United States. This proposal, once passed, will improve air quality by cutting harmful pollutants and deliver up to $85 billion in climate and public health benefits over the next two decades.
In response to the announcement Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments Executive Director Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN issued the following statement:
“For far too long, dirty power plants have polluted communities across the country, harming our health and fueling the climate crisis. Nurses understand the necessity of stronger federal standards that will protect our health and the health of future generations as well as support the transition to clean renewable energy sources that will promote a healthy climate.
“Nurses are urging the Biden administration to quickly finalize the strongest version of its standards to cut climate pollution from power plants. We look forward to engaging in the proposal process.”
