This Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Age

This Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency marked the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), passed in 1974 to set federal standards for drinking-water quality. ANHE was proud to be in attendance for this event which recognized such an important milestone.

“Clean water is a basic human right. In my home state of Michigan, we know too well how fiercely we must work to keep our water free of lead, PFAS, and other hazards,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) said. “Today we recognize the progress made by the landmark Safe Drinking Water Act, and recommit to working to ensure every family in America has access to clean and safe water.”

More than 170 environmental groups are pressing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to monitor microplastics in drinking water, citing significant health risks from this widespread pollutant. The legal petition calls on the EPA to include microplastics in its Safe Drinking Water Act monitoring by 2026. Microplastics, linked to severe health risks such as cancer and neurotoxicity, are found in drinking water, food and air worldwide. ANHE stands in solidarity with the 21 young people

ANHE stands in solidarity with the 21 young people leading America’s Climate Case - Juliana v. US! ✊

For nearly ten years, the Juliana 21 have fought for their day in court to secure fundamental climate rights for future generations. And for nearly ten years, the U.S. Government has wielded its power and misused the law to silence them - all while becoming the top producer of fossil fuels in the world.

In our constitutional democracy, the courts exist to protect peoples’ fundamental rights from government overreach - especially when children’s rights to life and physical safety are violated by their own government.

Last week, the Juliana 21 filed a Petition for Certiorari at the U.S. Supreme Court. They have the right to access justice. SCOTUS, let the youth be heard!

Today, the Biden Administration released the Unite

Today, the Biden Administration released the United States’ latest National Determined Contribution. The NDC released today, puts forth a target to reduce United States emissions by 61 to 66 percent by 2035, relative to 2005 levels and a methane reduction of at least 35 percent in 2035.

The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments’ Executive Director, Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN issued the following statement:

“Nurses thank the Biden administration for releasing the NDC before leaving office, a critical step to setting the stage for ambitious subnational action to address the climate emergency. While this NDC framework shows increasing ambition from the previous, unfortunately, the targets outlined fall short. Nurses around the world are caring for those and are part of communities most impacted by climate change – we are seeing the human impacts that result from the failure of leaders to act at the scale required."

Today the U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has authorized waivers of preemption for California to implement theAdvanced Clean Cars II (ACCII) program and the Heavy Duty Omnibus program, an effort to reduce NOx emissions from heavy-duty trucks.
The authorization of a waiver of preemption for the Advanced Clean Cars II (ACCII) program, allows for timely implementation of the program’s eight-year schedule for the twelve states (plus DC) that have already adopted the standard, while the authorized waiver of preemption for the Heavy Duty Omnibus (HDO) program, allows for implementation of the program for the ten states that have already adopted the standard. In response to today’s EPA’s announcement, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environment’s (ANHE) Executive Director Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN issued the following statement:

“The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments applauds the EPA for taking yet another step forward in protecting the public from health-harming pollution from the transportation sector. Health professionals like nurses understand the significant health implications from polluting vehicles, with more than 8,800 Americans losing their lives each year due to the poisonous effects of diesel exhaust and tailpipe emissions that contain toxic compounds that harm public health. Exposure to these pollutants can exacerbate and contribute to the development of asthma, lung disease, and cancer.

This latest EPA action reaffirms states’ authority under the Clean Air Act to adopt and implement their own clean vehicle and air quality regulations, which will help to mitigate toxic tailpipe pollution that worsens health throughout our country and will substantially boost efforts to deliver cleaner air across communities.”

ANHE was glad to join 74 Health, Environment, and Public Service Organizations to support a Congressional Resolution on 40th Anniversary of Bhopal Chemical Disaster. The resolution proposes proclaiming December 3 as National Chemical Disaster Awareness Day, in honor of victims and survivors of chemical disasters both in Bhopal and in the U.S., and recommends common-sense measures to protect communities’ health, prevent future chemical disasters, and hold companies accountable for the harmful effects of disasters they’ve caused. After a surge of heat-related workplace injuries in Nevada, state regulators approved a permanent heat stress standard Wednesday to protect the safety and health of indoor and outdoor workers. Businesses with more than 10 employees will be required to perform a one-time job hazard analysis of working conditions that could expose workers to heat illness for more than 30 minutes within a one hour time period under the new regulations. The standard also requires employers to provide workers a way to cool down in their written plan, in addition to training workers and supervisors on the risk factors for heat illness, how to avoid it, procedures for complying with the standard, and emergency procedures if an employee becomes ill. NEXT WEEK: For nurses who are interested in climate change, it is critical to understanding how the food system impacts and is impacted by climate change. It is estimated that 25 – 30% of greenhouse gases are attributed to the global food system. While this webinar will explore how climate change-associated weather patterns, extreme storms, and extreme heat events threaten both plant-based and animal-sourced food, we will also investigate how the predominant agricultural practices in the US are producing greenhouse gases, employing millions of pounds of fossil fuel-derived chemicals (including pesticides), and destroying ecosystems. We will also look at climate impacts from meat consumption versus plant-based diets. And finally, we will discuss nurses’ roles in making our food system more just and climate and eco-friendly.

On November 21st, the EPA released the “National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution,” outlining opportunities for action to protect communities from the impacts of plastic production and waste. This strategy aligns with the U.S. commitment to negotiating an ambitious international agreement with the aim of protecting public health and the environment by reducing plastic pollution around the world. The strategy is the third pillar of EPA’s “Building a Circular Economy for All” effort. From November 25th-December 1st, the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) took place in order to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution!

While at COP29, ANHE had the opportunity to participate in "A Fast, Full, Fair, Funded, Feminist Fossil Fuel Phase-Out" alongside @ClimateActionNetwork and @CareAboutClimate. Together, we discussed the campaign and outlined what exactly is required to ensure an equitable and just fossil fuel phaseout.

In this clip, hear from Jacob Johns, a Hopi and Akimel O’odham environmental defender who led the Indigenous Wisdom Keepers delegation at COP29. He offers important reminders about how the climate crisis has deep roots in colonization and discusses why we must hold accountable rich organizations for their actions in escalating the state of our climate.
