Supreme Court Declines to Halt Power Plant Carbon Pollution Standards

WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled (7-1) against an emergency request to halt the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) carbon pollution rules for existing coal-fired, and performance standards for new gas-fired power plants.

The Supreme Court’s decision, in upholding these EPA’s rules that will compel existing coal and new natural gas power plants to either cut or capture 90% of their climate pollution by 2032.

In response to yesterday’s announcement, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environment’s (ANHE) Executive Director Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN issued the following statement:

“Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision to deny a request to halt EPA’s finalized carbon pollution emission guidelines for existing coal-fired and performance standards for new gas-fired power plants is a win for public health. Nurses will continue to defend these vital EPA safeguards that will benefit our environment and public health by protecting our communities from the effects of climate change and air pollution.”
