Nurses respond to President Trump’s Joint Address to Congress
Washington D.C. – On Tuesday evening President Trump addressed the U.S. Congress, making a number of statements about the work of the Administration in the six weeks since inauguration and outlined their administrative priorities to “unleash” energy dominance and end electric vehicle “mandates.”
In response to last night’s Joint Address to Congress, Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN, Executive Director of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments stated that
“President Trump, thus far, has delivered the opposite of his promises, with his Administration continuing to dismantle protections to keep people safe from health-harming pollution. Americans didn’t vote for smoggy air, more asthma attacks and more sick days for their children. Due to the firing of hundreds of EPA workers, who test our air and water for pollution and contamination, the agency will be severely limited to adequately enforce critical laws designed to protect our health and our environment. The administration pretending climate change isn’t happening and continuing to rely on fossil fuels will only increase the chances of worsening the severe weather fueled by climate change and accelerate the climate crisis.”
The President’s speech was delivered while advocates from the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments and other leading medical and health groups earlier in the day met with elected officials in Washington D.C. to highlight the importance of strong action on climate and health.
