SEPTA is advancing its Zero Emission Bus Program, aiming to deploy hydrogen and electric buses to reduce emissions. However, challenges like funding uncertainties and infrastructure hurdles persist. Erin Johnson, ANHE member and public health advocate, emphasizes the health risks of diesel exhaust, which contains over 40 known carcinogens and contributes to about 70% of cancer risk from air toxins.

The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) is urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to adopt the most robust protections under the Safer Communities by Chemical Accident Prevention Rule (SCCAP), finalized in 2024. This rule aims to enhance safety measures at hazardous chemical facilities, safeguarding millions of workers and residents in nearby communities.

However, recent actions by the Trump administration to revisit and potentially weaken these chemical disaster prevention regulations have raised significant concerns. Advocates warn that rolling back these safeguards could increase the risk of chemical accidents, endangering public health and safety.
