Title: The Metabolome of Passive ENDS Exposure in Kids (The M-PEEK Study)
Summary: Jeannie Rodriguez (presenting), Irene Yang, Donghai Liang, Rachel Tchen, and Bayan Hawsawi assessed the feasibility of non-invasive biomatrices to detect secondhand e-cigarette vapor exposure in children and describe parental perceptions of vaping. Overall, sample-specific, and feature-specific correlations were strong to moderate between blood and the non-invasive biomatrices. Fourteen significant features were annotated, noting metabolites directly reflective of e-cigarette vapor exposure and metabolites of dopamine and oxidative stress, likely representing downstream effects of exposure. Most parents began vaping to stop smoking and described vaping as a minor health hazard or not a hazard. Parent vapers described
the “power of addiction”, “the appeal of vaping”, and a “cycle of judgement”.
