ANHE Research Forum Monthly Call – July

July 22, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

This month, Daniel Jackson Smith, PhD, RN, CNE will present his work – From Work to the Dialysis Chair: The Impacts of Occupational Exposures on Kidney Health

Daniel Jackson Smith, PhD, RN, CNE is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholar and Clinical Instructor at Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.

Occupational heat exposure and resulting dehydration has been associated with acute kidney dysfunction. There is growing evidence that repeated acute kidney injury at work can lead to the development of chronic kidney disease in the absence of traditional risk factors for developing chronic kidney disease, such as hypertension and diabetes. This talk will present Daniel’s dissertation research on the current occupational health research on kidney dysfunction in agricultural workers in California and Florida as well as the results of occupational and health history surveys conducted with undocumented immigrants receiving frequent, emergent-only hemodialysis at Atlanta’s safety net hospital.
