Dr. Azita Amiri, Ph.D., RN is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, College of Nursing, and a Bloomberg Fellow at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Amiri has been a nurse/midwife for over 20 years and has worked as a midwife for over a decade in developing countries in collaboration with the World Health Organization. In addition to teaching and guiding nursing students at the college of nursing, she leads the Environmental Justice Youth advocate Training (EJYAT) program. She works with youth in disadvantaged communities in Alabama and trains them as community leaders. Her goal is to train youth as community advocates and raise awareness about environmental justice and health disparities. Dr. Amiri is an advocate for environmental justice communities in Alabama. She has been working with Uniontown, Alabama’s community organization, since 2016. Dr. Amiri is a nurse researcher with an interest in indoor air, environmental health, and environmental justice. She measures indoor air quality by simulating residential and occupational settings in her lab and studies the common indoor air exposures, their concentrations and sources, and their impact on pregnancy outcomes, child health, and the well-being of the elderly.  She serves as the board member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments.
