California is making waves again 🌊 The CA Legi California is making waves again 🌊

The CA Legislature has adopted a $300 billion budget that includes historic investments in the state’s school meal program to expand healthy, plant-based meal options. Students in California will now have more opportunities to eat green 🥬🥑🥕🌽🌿

With this budget, California becomes the first state to provide public funding for plant-based school meals!

The investments they will be making include:

🍏 $100 million to support schools in procuring plant-based foods, as well as sustainably produced foods, California-grown foods, and foods to accommodate students with religious or other restricted diets.

🍏 $600 million to upgrade school kitchen infrastructure and to train and compensate food service workers, including to prepare plant-based meals and increase scratch-cooking, an important facilitator for expanding healthy, plant-forward menus.

We hope other states take notice and are able to go green in the school kitchen too 😊🌱

We’d like to take a moment to highlight our Stud We’d like to take a moment to highlight our Student Nurse Environmental Health Leadership Award recipient

As a recently graduated student nurse, Amelia Kirby is already making big moves. Soon she will be moving to Denver, CO to work in the Emergency Department at a local hospital. With previous experience in the non-profit sector, Amelia was looking for a career path that would allow her to help people in a more personal way which is what led her to nursing. Amelia has helped lead a diverse team to develop the nursing version of the Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC), a tool created in 2019 by University of California San Francisco medical students as a way to evaluate individual programs in integrating planetary health concepts. This year we are proud to award Amelia Kirby with the Student Nurse Environmental Health Leadership Award in partnership with the National Student Nurses Association.

Congrats Amelia Kirby! And thank you for all your efforts in establishing the importance of climate health within the field of nursing 🌿🌎🏨

Our children deserve clean air! ☁️✨ And it Our children deserve clean air! ☁️✨

And it all starts with cleaner vehicles. When traditional school buses are replaced with an electric alternative, students no longer are forced to be exposed to diesel emissions coming from their daily commute.

Last week, our intern Jacob checked out the zero-emission, electric-powered alternatives in person at the US Capitol. GreenPower Motor Company had a showcase allowing us to see firsthand what cleaner transportation looks like. 🚌 🌱
